Green pond water is almost always algae, and it grows because your pond has more sunlight and nutrients than it can handle. The good news: it’s fixable, and it’s preventable with the right pond maintenance routine.
What’s actually turning the water green
Most of the time, it’s single-celled algae floating in the water column — not a plant, not a disease, just algae multiplying fast in the right conditions. This is different from string algae or hair algae, which clumps on rocks and pond edges instead of clouding the water itself.
- Green water algae: microscopic, suspended, turns the whole pond cloudy or pea-soup colored
- String/hair algae: stringy clumps attached to rocks, liners, or plant stems

- Remove debris — net out leaves, uneaten food, and visible sludge from the bottom.
- Add a UV clarifier if you don’t already have one — it kills free-floating algae cells as water passes through, and is the single most effective fix for green water specifically.
- Check your filtration system — a pump or filter that’s undersized for the pond volume can’t keep up with nutrient buildup.

Preventing algae from coming back
Prevention comes down to keeping nutrients low and giving the water some shade or biological competition.
- Add floating or marginal plants (water lilies, water hyacinth) to compete with algae for nutrients and block some sunlight
- Don’t overfeed fish — uneaten food is one of the biggest nutrient sources
- Keep a consistent fish stocking level — too many fish means too much waste for the pond’s size

A backyard pond and a community water feature deal with the same algae science, but the scale changes the maintenance approach. A residential pond is usually small enough for the owner to manage with a net, a test kit, and an occasional partial water change. A community or township pond — often larger, with more foot traffic and runoff from surrounding landscaping — usually needs scheduled servicing: filtration checks, algae control, and water testing on a set calendar rather than an as-needed basis.
